Richard Garet, David Grollman & WvS + Sofy Yuditskaya @ Ab Uno Pluribus – October 2014 Session – 10/11/2014 from WvS on Vimeo.

RICHARD GARET For this performance Garet’s approach will focus on creating processes that interact and activate sonic material such as electromagnetic waves, modified tape, cracked media, sonification of light, and computer processing. This sonic construction will surface in realtime creating a poly-layered sonic field where the final outcome consists of amplifying manifestations between the materials and in articulating colliding-forces being carefully treated, weighed, measured.

Richard Garet interweaves various media including moving image, sound, multimedia performance, and photography. In work ranging from modified environments to site specific installations to audiovisual screening works, Garet constructs intimate spaces and immersive situations that draw attention to the processes of perception and cognition, and which activate sensorial, physical, psychological phenomena that reflect on the nature and experience of time. Garet’s pieces, whether conceptual in origin or stemming from his investigation of complex systems and algorithmic translations, are informed by the background noise established by mass media culture and the collective arena that surrounds him. Garet’s reductive process seeks to invert the normative function of this background noise, drawing it up from subliminal status to an active presence. He finds further inspiration from material interactions that incorporate problems of context, technology, defunctionalization, commodity, and environment.

Richard Garet holds an MFA from Bard College. Recent projects include International Biennial of Contemporary Art of Cartagena de Indias, Cartagena, Colombia; Bioderivas, Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre, Tenerife, Spain; Queens International, Queens Museum of Art Biennial, Queens, New York; Soundings: A Contemporary Score, Museum of Modern Art, New York; Extraneous to the Message, Julian Navarro Projects, NY; The Spacious Now and the Scale of the instantaneous, Studio 10, NY; 5X5 Real Unreal, Museum of Art Acarigua-Araure, Venezuela; EAC: Espacio de Arte Contemporáneo, Montevideo, Uruguay; Fine Arts Museum of Montreal; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA), Barcelona, Spain; Art Museum of Puerto Rico, San Juan, Puerto Rico; and el Museo del Barrio, NYC. His sonic constructions have been published through sound art labels such as 23five, And-Oar, Non Visual Objects, Winds Measure Recordings, Unframed Recordings, Con-V, Leerraum, White_Line Editions, OBS, and Contour Editions.

DAVID GROLLMAN is a percussionist from NYC who performs freely improvised music. He performs in art galleries, tiki bars, and venues of curious ambience made more curious by his mongrel sounds. David bows, scrapes, blows, slaps, rubs, caresses, abuses, and generally tests the limits of his instrument. Anything is game. Anything may be a participant if the musical conversation calls for it. Artist, instrument, audience, and environment become ambiguous terms, conspiring in a theatrical exploration of chance dynamics and serendipitous exchanges.

LAUDS, Lea Bertucci & Megan Moncrief @ “Ab Uno Pluribus” – September Session – 9/20/2014 from WvS on Vimeo.

LEA BERTUCCI is an interdisciplinary artist, composer and improvisor who works with installation, sound, video and photography. As an instrumentalist, she focuses on the Bass Clarinet in an electro-acoustic context. The timbre of the Bass Clarinet is amplified and abstracted with the aid of electronics. Feedback is an essential part of the extended technique, as the body of the instrument becomes a resonant chamber and the pitch of the feedback is controlled with key work. 1/4 inch tape collage contribute structural and textural elements.

Lea has been an artist-in-residence at The Wave Farm, Smack Mellon, LMCC, The Queens Museum of Art and Roulette. She was also awarded a Young Composers’ commission from Roulette in 2012. She has performed solo and collaborative works at venues such as Issue Project Room, The Kitchen, Anthology Film Archives, Artists’ Television Access in San Francisco, St. Marks Ontological-Hysteric Theater, The Wave Farm,  Galapagos Artspace, Roulette, The Queens Museum of Art and the High Zero Festival.

AERONAUT is brooklyn-based composer and multi-instrumentalist Steve Fors’ solo project. Working primarily with a palette of sounds generated with trombone, lap steel guitar, sonica, analog electronics, bowed metal, and voice, Steve Fors crafts lush, immersive soundscapes. As half of the Chicago-based drone outfit the Golden Sores–and now solo as Aeronaut–Fors has shared the stage with the Magik Markers, Locrian, Century Plants, Grasshopper, Superstorms, Justin Walter, Billy Gomberg, and Neil Jendon, among others.
Having released six albums in as many years, Fors continues to challenge genre definition. Pulling from psych, drone, noise and new classical traditions, he plays a sort of maximal minimalism—attempting to overwhelm listeners alternately with monolithic beauty and/or sonic devastation. TRAIN TRASH is a solo music project by artist Gregory Paul. Gregory has been making and recording experimental music since his early teens under many monikers, but his goal with the Train Trash project is to make something cohesive, human, and personal from the technology and objects of the digital age. The concept of Train Trash was inspired by the words of Jordan Lee who heard Gregory’s music and laughed and said it was the “most human thing [he’d] ever heard”. Since then, the focus of the project has been to reach inside to explore the most human parts of ourselves. Everything is a variable, from how we experience the world, to how we feel about each other person. Some sounds are personal to Gregory, some are universal to all people.

Luciernaga, Pas Musique + G. Lucas Crane Live at “ab uno pluribus” – May Session from WvS on Vimeo.

PAS MUSIQUE creates musical collages through the form of abstract sound. Their name refers metaphorically to those who have been aborted by society, because their point of view doesn’t fit in the constraints of “normal” society. The compositions themselves are more akin to soundscapes than “songs” in the traditional sense. These are sonic sculptures in the mode of pure art.

http://www.pasmusique.net/

LUCIERNAGA is the solo recording project of Joao M. Da Silva, owner of Fabrica Records. Luciernaga uses field recordings, guitar, shruti box, buddha machine, mbira, and cassettes to create textures and sounds made to evoke a sense of dread or induce meditative states, depending on the context/circumstance and mood of the performer.

G. LUCAS CRANE is a sound artist, performer, and musician whose work focuses on information anxiety, media confusion, and recycled technology. Using a combination field recordings culled from the underbelly of the contemporary sonic media landscape and homemade electronic instruments, oscillators and broken machines, he creates compositions and performances as a reaction to, and illustration of, our information detritus choked times. Past work has dealt with musicality of a location or route, horror and phantasm in the information age, technology as abomination, the mystical presence of obsolete recording technology, recording as ritual, and the religious, poetic, and magical connotations of feedback and improvisation. Many of the soundscapes and collage work are built around quickly moving tape manipulations, the common cassette being a perfect example of old technology as iconic personal Gnostic totem. Years of environment recording and sample hunting have resulted in a broken library of material that is collaged together live, an information life that is constantly folding back on itself fractal-like, which he believes illustrates modern experience. Tape manipulation harkens back to the early days of experimental music, and in the context of the digital era it creates a sonic counterpoint on the continuum between hi and low fi, folk outsider and academic composition. Crane’s work exists in a meditation on the blurred boundary between new and old tech and the emotional and social toll created by the rapid advancement of the technological sonic/environment.

Collaborations include sound design for the Performance Thanatology Research Society’s production of ‘History of Heat’ and ‘The 50 Greatest Ladies and Gentlemen” at the Ontological Hysteric Theater in New York ; a batshit crazy full US tour with Woods; a European tour with drone collective Vanishing Voice; a production of ‘Oh What War’ at Here Theater in NYC with the Juggernaught Theater company; a ghost story album with Baltimore experimental vocalist Ric Royer; Machine design with New York electronic Instrument company CasperElectronics; Studio and performance work with musical entities Woods, Castanets, Grizzly Bear, and Wooden Wand; and solo performances as Nonhorse in the US and Europe. He also co-runs Silent Barn, an experimental art and performance space in Queens, New York City.

FABRICE CROIZÉ is a visual artist and a photographer based in Paris and Brussels. He has co-founded with Sabrina Montiel-Soto, *Calvacreation*, which is an independent platform of experimentation, reflection and creation. As a duo they create “immersive” video installations and performances by confronting new technologies with traditional methods. They question notions of space and vertigo, when reality flips on imaginary perspectives. Their innovative works have been exhibited and well received in various reputable art festivals such as Nuit Blanche in Brussels and Festival Némo in Paris as well as galleries in Europe, South America and Asia. As a solo artist Fabrice Croizé performs Live projections with musicians and dancers under the name of Gaze. He travels since 2013 to share his poetical view and esthetic with the public.

GENUX-B is a sound artist who works primarily with electronic noises to create compositions that border the familiar worlds of ambient atmospheric music and specific events more akin to Foley artists. He explores the various textural qualities that are specific to granular synthesizers and are usually relegated to our modern age background soundscape by bringing them forward and putting them into order. Coming from a visual background with a masters degree in fine art, installation, he is acutely aware of the power in sound to alter our perceptions of the world around us. He has been working in New York for 15 years and has organizing events, most notably “Flow” in collaboration with Jeremy Slater, an event that explores the noisier elements in sound.

SADAF is a multidisciplinary artist and musician. Her rough, industrial noise and haunting vocal improvisations focus on the political machinations of glamour. Her debut LP is expected on Hoss Records in 2014. Based in New York, Nava’s practice incorporates a variety of mediums, often linked through a foundation in performance. In an era where self-performativity and documentation is prevalent, the conceptuality inherent in contemporary performance art often seeps into tactics of advertising and brand-formation.

KEN B formed the experimental noise project “BLOATER” in late 2007 with guitar player Steve Smith and recorded an album “Radiac” in 2009, self-released in 2011. BLOATER combines elements of free improvisation with proto-industrial music, harsh noise, ambient electronics, and non-traditional approaches to the electric guitar. He was also a member of the free-improvisational band “CLUTTER” aka $50 TRUMPET with Brett Zweiman and Marc Gaetani. Ken has performed at The Tank, Public Assembly, Silent Barn, Goodbye Blue Monday, Spectrum, Front Room Gallery, Littlefield, Theaterlab, Legion, Fat Baby, The Charleston, Governor’s Island (Figment Fest), Rocky’s, Little Bar (Philadelphia) and Beat Kitchen (Chicago).

Miah created the APE patch (Audio Processing Etcher) which generates visuals and effects based upon audio frequencies and amplitude. Her art work explores the continual process of creation we are engaged with and seeks to encourage a heightened awareness of the weight of our presence. One of the ways she expresses this theme is through creating environments in which participants’ noise impact the visual environment.
