“foci + loci” explore the topological treatment of time and space afforded by game engines. Treating the map editors in video games as virtual sound stages, Tamara Yadao and Chris Burke design immersive electroacoustic spaces that can be “played” as instruments. The duo evolved through a fascination with the malleability of virtual space paired with an interest in electroacoustic improvisation. foci + loci have received a NYSCA grant for 2013 to develop their full scale game art performance installation ‘Bal(l)ade’. Tamara received an American Composers’ Forum grant in 2015 commissioning the music for foci + loci’s “Another Kind of Spiral” which premiered at Cluster Festival in Winnipeg with a performance at Centre Georges Pompidou following soon after. They have performed and shown at galleries and festivals in the US and Canada, including Vector Festival in Toronto and Babycastles, The Stone and Joe’s Pub in NYC.

RANJIT BHATNAGAR [self-made instruments]
RICHARD KAMERMAN [percussion, miscellany, anecdotes]
LI LI [loops + electronics]
Live visuals by CHRIS JORDAN
Curated by WvS, co-curated by Joao Da Silva / Produced by WvS & Miah Artola

RANJIT BHATNAGAR is a sound artist who works with technology, language, and found materials to create interactive installations and musical instruments. His works have been exhibited across the United States and Europe. In his annual Instrument-a-Day project, now in its ninth year, he creates a new homemade musical instrument each day of the month in February. Ranjit recently joined an international group of artists to build a large-scale musical installation at Palais de Tokyo in Paris. His interactive sound work, Singing Room for a Shy Person, commissioned by Amsterdam’s Métamatic Research Initiative, premiered at NYC’s Clocktower Gallery in 2013; and later moved to Museum Tinguely in Basel for the Métamatic Reloaded exhibition, and was shown at the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam.

In 2013, he launched his speech/music instrument, Speak and Play, with Margaret Leng Tan at the UnCaged Toy Piano Festival; presented work at Qubit’s Machine Music Festival; and premiered a calligraphy and gesture based score for the Brooklyn Ballet with calligrapher David Chang. His sculpture Stone Song for the Caramoor Centre’s Sound Arts Festival was installed at the Neuberger Museum at Purchase College, New York and in 2015 became a part of Caramoor’s permanent collection.

CHRIS JORDAN explores the medium of light, movement, and time through the use of technology. His installations have appeared at the MoMA, The New Museum, The Whitney Museum, The Museum of Natural History, The Chelsea Museum, Times Square, among others. The common elements that define Jordan’s work include explorations into memory, photography, film, interactivity, and projections. By examining the political and social implications technology has on us through a diversity of media, his work challenges the viewer to redefine perceptions of audience and performer. Jordan co-curated the Figment Sculpture Park on Governors Island in 2012 and 2013; a 4 month interactive sculpture park, visited by over 100,000 people each year.

RICHARD KAMERMAN (b. NYC, 1985) has been breaking electronics and crashing computers while trying to coax interesting and unpredictable sounds out of them for over a decade. Occasionally, he has also presented himself as a more serious composer of re-performable written music. Keywords: amplification, magnification, obfuscation, systems design, game theory, patterns, human error, accident, failure. Although a firm believer in the axiom that “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” he ceased collecting his instruments from piles of junk left on the curb several years ago, fearing he might bring home bedbugs. Recordings of his solo or collaborative works have been released by Erstwhile Records, Pilgrim Talk, Contour Editions, RRRecords, and Engraved Glass, among others. Kamerman has performed or had his music performed throughout the US as well as internationally in Canada, Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Chile. He also runs the small-press music label, Copy For Your Records.

LI LI (formerly rawmean) is the solo project of Brooklyn-based musician Ramin Rahni. Using live-looping, he builds songs that are in the spirit of electronic music, but made up of more organic sounding elements. He also plays drums in the experimental pop duo Tar Of, and performs middle eastern-inspired techno as part of Googoosh Dolls.

KAVEH HAGHTALAB is an Iranian kamancheh player and drummer. He grew up listening to his parents playing Persian classical music. His mother taught him music when he was 9 and he started to play kamancheh when he was 11. He started to perform professionally at concerts and festivals in Iran with various music ensembles when he was 14.

He studied Iranian and Middle Eastern music with notable musicians in Iran such as Ostad Majid Kiani, and was chosen as an ensemble member of Center For Preservation And Research of Iranian Music.

Since moving to the U.S, he has toured and performed solo and as a part of different projects, as a drummer and kamancheh player. His Music Meditation grew out of this; it is a guided meditation wherein suggested imagery is replaced by musical form.

Dawoud is an accomplished writer / novelist (he writes for several online publications, wrote a Sufi Science Fiction novel “A Quantum Hijra” and a collection of short stories “A Mansion with Many Rooms” and is at work on his second novel, a book on philosophy, and a textbook on music). Chris Ianuzzi + Sofy Yuditskaya @ Ab Uno Pluribus – December 2016 Session – 12/10/2016 from WvS on Vimeo.

New York’s Composer/Songwriter CHRIS IANUZZI makes a fantasy world of music and visuals that is highly recommended instead of blowing your money on either therapy or narcotics!

Ianuzzi’s interest in electronic music never waned after the sound of a Moog synthesizer at a music store triggered an earlier childhood hallucinogenic memory first experienced during a dental procedure. Highlights from his formal music training include a performance for the American Society for University Composers (in which he played a piano using a chisel, rubber wedge and processed the sound through an ARP 2600). For a number of years Ianuzzi served as an Electronic Creative associate with the legendary Suzanne Ciani and her Electronic Music Boutique for Sound Design and Scoring. Chris’ early years also included work with Vangelis and ex-Tangerine Dream member Peter Baumann as well as work on Billboard chart-topping projects such as “AEIOU” by Freeze and “Way of Life” by The Puppets. During this time, Ianuzzi developed his song writing skills. Ianuzzi also recorded two albums with the band Sluka (Meldac Records) while touring Japan and Europe.

When he returned to New York he scored for visual works in all media, including orchestral music for the HBO “Earth to Moon” series and creating sound design and musical composition for large interactive environments.

After 2000, Ianuzzi started an electronic pop performance project called I, Synthesist and created 3 albums, and some EP’s.

Today, Chris is making electronic instrumental music and working with a brain interface for his modular synthesizer. This interface sends EEG signals that are transformed into musical gestures. It also creates immersive environmental soundscapes.

Though he has become a bit more grounded since his childhood psychedelic musical awakening, Ianuzzi’s creativity remains a driving force. Using classic analog modular synthesizers in conjunction with the most current digital technologies, his goal is to make modern music that includes his unmistakable sound.

David First + Bleue Liverpool + Douglas Lucas + WvS @ Ab Uno Pluribus – October 2016 Session – 10/22/2016 from WvS on Vimeo.

DAVID FIRST‘s musical life is filled with opposites and extremes. At 20 he played guitar with renowned avant-jazz pianist Cecil Taylor in a legendary Carnegie Hall concert. Two years after that he was creating electronic music at Princeton University (recordings of which were released in 2014 on Dais records) and leading a Mummerʼs String Band in Philadelphia parades. He has played in raucous drunken bar bands, semi-legal DIY basements and in pin-drop quiet concert halls with classical ensembles. As a composer he is known for his dense, mesmerizing drone structures which he performs sitting trance-like without seeming to move a muscle. At other times, he can be found playing guitar with his psychedelic punk band, Notekillers, where he is a whirling blur of hyperactive energy. Other projects include his micro-rhythm and drone ensemble, the Western Enisphere and SWATi, a collaboration with acupuncturist Isobeau Trybula. First has been called “a fascinating artist with a singular technique” in The New York Times and “a bizarre cross between Hendrix and La Monte Young” in The Village Voice. He recently received a grant from NewMusicUSA to release a series of solo LPs entitled Same Animal, Different Cages.

MARTIN PHILADELPHY is Austria’s most unique and peculiar music leader of independent jazz, improv, electronic pop and special performances. The Press considered Martin Philadelphy to be Austria’s “Frank Zappa” reminded of sly stripped down music of Tom Waits. His musical career started more than 18 years ago with an bad accident on his bike, intended to give him a boot following his profession and astonishing talent. This moment should be a sign of life. Philadelphy got a guitar and started to perform, sing, compose and produce.

Born in Tyrol, but “re-born to a second life” in 1992 when he bought his first guitar. He participated in a number of experimental rock, jazz and avant-garde projects. He wrote music for cabaret, theater and film, acted on the theater stage and in films, and founded bands performing in a wide variety of styles (from progressive folk to electronic). (Philadelphy Experience, Pfhouu…, Paint, Philadelphy-Martinek, 6to6 String Dezibel). He’s touring around Europe (Austria, Czech Republic. Russia, Germany, Italy, Poland) and America. His music was heard at a number of contemporary festivals in Austria, such as Steirischer Herbst, Klangspuren Schwaz.

AMOS FISHER [clarinet + percussion]

Live visuals by JOSHUE OTT

New York-based visualist and software designer JOSHUE OTT creates cinematic visual improvisations, performed live and projected in large scale. Working from hand-drawn forms manipulated in real-time with superDraw, a software instrument of his own design, Ott composes evolving images that reside somewhere between minimalism, psychedelia, and Cagean chance, delivered with an inescapably human touch. Supple yet digital, ephemeral but instantly memorable, Ott renders sound into vision, yielding an immersive multi-sensory experience that is at once immediate and synergistic, a unique visual narrative born in the moment.

Performing with musicians from all genres between classical and avant-electronica,

Ott’s visuals have been featured at Unsound festival NY, Biennial of the Americas, Mutek, Communikey, Plateaux festival (Poland), GAFFTA, Le Cube gallery (Paris), the Playgrounds Audiovisual Art Festival (Netherlands), and the Ars Electronica Animation Festival. He has performed with the American Composer’s Orchestra at Carnegie Hall; with Son Lux at MASS MoCA; with Gina Gibney Dance at the Baryshnikov Arts Center; and frequently at venues throughout New York City, including Le Poisson Rouge, Roulette, and Galapagos.

Ott is also the visual mastermind behind the hit iOS apps Thicket, snowDrift, Falling Stars, Pitch Painter, and the Variant series.
